As curious creatures, we ask a lot of questions. The kids we serve ask LOTS of questions! And I love how the questions asked during this terrifying moment in Mark 4 point us to the miracle of God’s love for His creation.
Read Mark 4:35–41. What stands out to you? What haven’t you noticed before? Which question resonates with you? It’s easy to read the disciples’ plea with disdain because we know they were saved. But in that moment, what would you have said as Jesus napped?
Jesus first rebukes the wind and waves; He then rebukes His friends. All will bow to His authority. Every hurricane, every tsunami, everything that rages will be still and know that He is God. Where do you need to be still? Being still is what you can do, so He can do what only He can do.
The disciples expect Jesus to do something, yet they are baffled when He does. I don’t know about you, but that’s also true of me. I have cried out to Jesus so many times as though He does not know who He is, and then I’ve stood back stupefied when He shows up. Jesus has power over creation. “And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you” (Romans 8:11 NIV).
