Men’s Retreat 2018 Takeaways

Rick Lindberg, one of our guests from the 2018 Men’s Retreat, shares some of his takeaways from Dave Dusek’s teaching.

What a meaningful men’s retreat. Guest speaker David Dusek was so engaging with a passion for military history and a love of movies. We walked through and came face to face with the real issues that we as men are facing. Over the weekend, we dealt with some very important truths for me that we can easily miss:

  1. We are in a battle with an enemy that has a very strategic and specific individual plan to take you out.
    • Fighting this battle solo is not very smart. We all need a fire team (military term for two- to four-guy teams where effective fighting is really done).
    • We need support, encouragement, and accountability within that group to survive.

  1. Words have a long shelf life…
    • Of all the words that were given to you by your father growing up, were any in agreement with the truth of what our Heavenly Father says about us, or not?
    • If not, you just have to choose which voice you are going to listen to:
      • David Dusek had the opportunity to know a circus performer, a man who stood, juggling chainsaws, on top of two white Clydesdale horses that ran around the center ring of Barnum and Bailey’s Circus. David asked him, “What would you do if one of the horses got spooked by a spectator and ran off?” The man replied, “That’s easy—I would just pick one. I’d identify the horse that was going rogue and choose to stand on the other one. You see, I can easily stand on one horse.”

  1. The tongue has the power of life and death.
    • As we choose to stand on the “horse” of truth about who we are in God’s eyes, we now have another choice to make. You see, words we speak have the power of life and death. Are you going to choose to speak life or death to those around you?
      • Life creates things.
      • God has given you the privilege to speak life, if you choose to.

These were some of the takeaways I had from the retreat this year. It was a great investment of my time for a wonderful, relaxing, and invigorating weekend that will pay dividends for years to come!
