Follow the Leader

In God’s big story, the Israelites wanted a king to be in charge of them, even though God warned them it would not end well. King Saul disobeyed God, and God later took the kingdom away from Saul.

Read 1 Samuel 8:4–9; 9:15–17; 15:7–11. Then play a game of Follow the Leader. Begin by choosing someone to be the leader. The rest of the family will follow this person around and do the same actions the leader does. Give each kid in your family a chance to be the leader.

Remind kids that God is our leader and always knows best. We trust Him, obey Him, and follow Him.

Create It

Our Family Declaration

It’s easy to take charge of things in our lives and create our own plans. Sometimes it’s easy to forget God is in charge. But God’s plan is always perfect, and He knows what is best.

Use a piece of poster board and colorful markers to create a family declaration. At the top of the poster board, write “Our Family Declaration”. Under the heading, write “In our family, God is in charge of … ”. On this declaration, list things you will give God charge over in your family, such as your time or money. Make a list together.

Discuss how this declaration will help you make decisions in the future. Encourage kids to decorate the poster and display it in a place your family can interact with it often.

In Early Childhood ministry, we teach basic biblical truths in ways little hearts can understand, from birth all the way through kindergarten. Our desire is to have children learn in fun and interesting ways how much God loves them. The video and resources on this page are designed for parents to experience this at home with their children.
