More than 1,000 kids “took the plunge” at this year’s vacation Bible school
Encouraging all people to pursue a lifelong, joyous relationship with Jesus Christ.” This is Stonebriar’s mission statement; you’ve probably heard it. And if you were at Stonebriar, June 11–15, from 9 a.m. to noon, you heard the sounds of children singing and laughing and adults sharing the Good News of God’s love. You may have even witnessed a number of precious children praying and committing their hearts . . . embarking on their lifelong relationship with Jesus Christ.
June 11–15 marked SCC’s annual vacation Bible school. This year’s theme was “Take the Plunge,” and the more than 1,000 kids who attended got to dive into a deeper relationship with Jesus. By the end of the week, 115 children had made a decision to place their faith in Christ.
VBS also is a great opportunity to introduce new families in the community to the church. One VBS volunteer said she was approached by a family at the end of the week. They said they loved the environment at the church and appreciated the children’s ministry; so they planned to start coming to Stonebriar.
Throughout the week, leaders used Bible stories like the woman at the well and Jesus washing the disciples’ feet to encourage kids to take the plunge into obedience, courage, worship, faith, and service.
After the Bible school, kids who trusted Christ received a book that helps children understand what it means to be a Christian. Their families also received a letter and information on enrolling their kids in SCC’s baptism classes.
Kristi McElheney, elementary coordinator for SCC’s Children’s Ministries, said this year’s Bible school was a group effort between the leadership team and about 350 faithful volunteers who helped make the week a success. Giving up a week of summer to be surrounded by so many kids is definitely one way of taking the plunge into courage. But these volunteers also gave kids a great example of obedience, faith, worship, and service. And their sacrifice will have a lasting impact on the lives of children for years to come.
