VBS: Behind the Scenes
by Kristi McElheney
ministry leader of elementary
Ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes as we plan out summer programs like VBS? It all begins in January, with a small team of people first selecting curriculum and a theme that will generate excitement. Our ultimate goal is for kids and adults to have fun and grow spiritually during VBS. This year's theme is "B.O.O.T. Camp."
Once all this is set, we divide up the work into various age groups, activities, and volunteer recruitment and training. We prepare for about 250 preschool aged children who will experience an age-appropriate, fun, and nurturing week learning God's word, singing songs, doing crafts, and playing with friends. In addition to these kids, we estimate hosting 750–900 elementary-aged children, many who have never heard the message of Christ. Each child entering our church will participate in a week of games, music, skits, and crafts—all while learning about Christ and His word.
Registration for VBS, June 15–19, begins Sunday, April 19. All kids entering kindergarten through fourth-grade graduates are invited to participate. Registration is $5.
