Most tourists in Africa have heard of the “big five,” the five big game animals that are most sought after on safaris. Most missionaries in Africa deal daily with a far more significant “big five,” namely, the five seemingly intractable problems that torture the people of this massive and beautiful continent. The real “big five” in Africa are poverty, disease, ignorance, violence and corruption. Although finding the “big five” on a safari may be a challenge, the real “big five” touch you everyday. These realities overwhelm you with sorrow and hopelessness. Does anyone have a solution? Not really. Billions of dollars have been spent and squandered here. Every little success shrinks under the pressure of the scale of need. Africa sneers at your best efforts and tells you give up every day.
Fortunately the mandate of the gospel and the power of the Spirit urge us forward. God is at work in this land. We hear the testimonies and we see truly transformed lives. It’s hard to see one transformed life in the mass and sprawl of Mozambique’s slums. But they’re there, quietly demonstrating the power of God.
That’s why we’re here picking ourselves up and dusting ourselves off everytime we want to give up. That’s why Isaias Uaene and his dear family stay here, slowly chipping away at the mountain of need in front of them. Thanks, Stonebriar, for making a difference in Mozambique.
